Diversio’s 2021 Top 25: The World’s Highest-Performing D&I Companies

In the summer of 2020, prompted by the tragic killing of George Floyd and several other Black Americans, communities across the world had a long-overdue reckoning with racial injustice. The unprecedented wave of social activism that followed was further driven by the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 on people of colour. As a result, corporate leaders began to publicly acknowledge the ways in which systemic racism was affecting their workforce — and to a greater extent, their failure to address these barriers proactively and effectively.

Many companies made loud public pronouncements about their intention to change business practices, process, and internal culture to address these issues. But which companies are really “walking the talk”?

It’s Up to Us to Hold Companies Accountable

Far too often, corporations escape public criticism despite their failure to act on their words. This is a direct result of stakeholders — from consumers (i.e. us) to directors — failing to hold each other and themselves responsible.

Diversio, with our D&I expertise coupled with our empowering data-driven technology, is committed to being the leader of inevitable change.

These annual Top 25 lists will showcase those companies that are achieving strong results relative to their peers. The averages shown, however, will give meaningful insight into the journey all companies are on; a journey that’s never truly complete, but for some, is yet to even be started.

Our hope is that we all shift our attitudes based on what we see below. Our hope is that we change the narrative for the D&I story.

Diversio Score

The Diversio Score is how we understand an organization’s current position in diversity and inclusion. It is measured through a weighted average in three key areas: Diversity, Inclusion, and Commitment.

Diversity looks at a company’s management. Specifically, this criterion scores based on the percentages of women and people of colour within the organization’s board of senior leadership. Each factor is weighted at 50%. For example, if a company’s Diversity Score for Gender is 80 and their Diversity Score for PoC is 60, the company’s total Diversity Score is 70.

Commitment takes a binary approach to scoring. By reading through published reports, Diversio attaches a score of 100 to companies that have made public commitments to EDII initiatives and a score of 0 to companies that have not.

Inclusion evaluates employee data. By scouring Glassdoor for employee reviews, Diversio scores a company with respect to 27 pain points, including transparency, inclusive leadership, and career development.

50% of the Diversio Score is derived from Inclusion. This is the most important criterion because the general feelings of employees provide insight into the company’s culture and dictate performance in the future. The remaining 50% is evenly split between Diversity and Commitment.

Top 25 List

In honor of George Floyd and the BLM movement, Diversio will publish their Top 25 companies annually from this year on. The lists will be categorized by major indices: Fortune 500, S&P500, and TSX60.
